When Is The Best Time To Trim Crape Myrtles

Prune crape myrtles in early spring after they have finished flowering. Wait until the last frost date for your area, and then prune off all of the growth that is more than 8 inches above ground level to encourage new growth from the roots. You can also cut back branches that are growing out of control and think it will look better if you do this up high where other branches can grow underneath them instead of tying them down with wire or string to dry out so much. Try not to remove too many leaves at one time as foliage helps retain moisture in winter and protects against cold temperatures during those long dark winters we get here in South Texas!
