Milk thistle is usually taken three times a day at the same time, 30 to 45 minutes apart. It can be used as often as daily or weekly if needed. The best way to take milk thistle is by mouth with water, juice or tea. Pills are not recommended for this herb because they may inhibit its absorption in the intestines and lead to side effects.
Does milk thistle have any interactions?
There are few known drug-drug interactions involving milk thistle, including alprazolam (an anti-anxiety medication) and warfarin (a blood thinner). However, preliminary studies show that it does not adversely affect either of these medications’ effectiveness when taken alongside milk thistle extract for up to 12 weeks.
