The best time to go is from May to October. In the high season, you’ll have a hard time finding a hotel room without being charged an arm and leg for it. It’s also important to remember that there are lots of tourists in China during this period as well, so prices can vary greatly by area. You should never pay more than USD 50-55 per night for a hotel room anywhere in China unless you’re going out of your way to find an expensive one! Also note that accommodations cost much less during Chinese New Year (January or February) and on holidays because demand drops significantly then! Here’s my advice: whatever trip you take, make sure it includes at least 2 days in Hong Kong! I love Hongkong but think about how long the flight will be from Taipei if you don’t spend enough time there first. That said…if flying into Hong Kong seems like too much hassle try traveling down via Macau instead – it’s only around 3 hours away by plane.
