When Is The Best Time To Divide Hostas

Divide hostas in spring or fall. Spring is best, because the soil has warmed up enough to make it easier to dig out roots, but fall provides more time for new plant growth before winter rains begin. If you are dividing a large number of plants, wait until early summer when they have started off well and then divide them into groups of similar species. Divide only one plant at a time over several days so that the divisions will be roughly equal in size.
